On February 17, 2025, the Otaru Development and Construction Department of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced that the 3.3km section between Yoichi IC and Niki IC on Shiribeshido will open at 4pm on Sunday, March 23.

Shiribeshido is a high-standard road that runs south from the Otaru JCT on the Sassaru Expressway along the Oshamanbe-Otaru route. It will be extended south by one section from Yoichi IC, which opened in December 2018.

This will reduce travel time from New Chitose Airport from 92 minutes to 88 minutes, and from Sapporo City from 73 minutes to 69 minutes, a reduction of 4 minutes each.

Yoichi is famous for the Nikka Whisky factory, but the surrounding area, including Niki, is dotted with orchards and wineries, and there are high hopes for tourism promotion. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism quoted the Yoichi Town Office as saying, “If the expressway is extended and travel times are shortened, we believe that more tourists will stop by Yoichi Town or Niki Town before coming to Niseko, and we hope that this will lead to tourism promotion in the entire Shiribeshi region.”

This line is included in the “Niseko Tourism Zone,” a world-famous resort area, and it has been decided that the expressway will be operated from Niki south to the Niseko IC.
